Big Sky Kids

LAUGH, MOVE, PLAY, EXPLORE: GET THE CHANCE TO BE A KID.

To be a Big Sky Kid at Eagle Mount is to experience the incredible wonders of Montana’s outdoors, even as you face the challenges cancer has brought into your life. Big Sky Kids empowers participants to escape the confines of treatment schedules and hospital walls and experience all the thrills that our state has to offer!

Through this program, children and young adults aged 5 to 26, along with their families, can attend medically supervised camps that promote strength, wellness, fun, and freedom in an inspiring natural landscape. You’ll make new friends and memories, and forge meaningful connections that bring deep emotional support both during and after your camp experience.

Begun in 1985, Big Sky Kids serves young people with cancer from Montana and all over the U.S. We provide four different oncology summer camps, as well as a family ski weekend every spring. Our camps are centered around exciting Montana adventures such as white-water rafting, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, zip-lining, and touring the wonders of Yellowstone National Park.

Program Offerings

Spring Fling

Activities during this annual reunion weekend include downhill skiing or snowboarding at Big Sky Resort, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Lone Mountain Ranch, and a pizza and pool party. Spring Fling is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends and families met at previous camps. Eagle Mount covers the cost of lodging, lift tickets and rentals.

Flight Camp

Flight Camp is designed for young adult cancer survivors ages 18-26 years old with dreams of flying. In partnership with Summit Aviation, Big Sky Kids provides four campers the opportunity to learn how to fly a plane and see the beauty of Montana from an entirely new perspective. Campers get hands-on during this 5 day adventure! Each morning starts with participants and their certified flight instructors conducting a pre-flight inspection on Summit’s aircraft before taking to the skies! All flight lessons take place above some of the best views Montana has to offer, as campers learn basic aircraft control and how to perform basic maneuvers; by the end of the week many are even performing their own take-offs and landings! Campers return from their morning flights to delicious themed lunches, afternoons tours of Bozeman International Airport facilities (including emergency response operations, the air traffic control tower, and private jets) and a ground lesson where instructors go over flight controls and aerodynamics, helpful tips for landing smoothly, and how to plan a cross-country flight. The week culminates in a graduation flight to Driggs, ID, during which campers get a bird’s eye view of the majestic Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons!

Camp Braveheart

Kayak, ride horses, fish, swim, create arts and crafts, eat s’mores, and more! Camp Braveheart is designed for campers aged 5 to 10 and their immediate families. Children in this age bracket that are post-treatment are welcome to apply! We’ll gather for 5 nights at Hyalite Youth Camp, a rustic facility located on the beautiful shores of Hyalite Reservoir just outside of Bozeman. Camp Braveheart is medically supervised by a nurse, and the only cost to families is transportation to and from your home.

Big Sky Adventure

You’ll be forever changed by this unforgettable experience of the beautiful outdoors. Big Sky Adventure Camp is designed for kids ages 11 to 18 who are still in treatment for their cancer or who have recently completed their treatment, plus one parent or guardian each. This unique camp includes a float on the Yellowstone river, horseback riding, white-water rafting, a day trip to Yellowstone National Park, and many more exciting excursions. Big Sky Adventure Camp is medically supervised by an oncologist, and is an all-expense paid vacation, including travel.

Young Adult Retreat

Young Adult Retreat (YAR) is designed for young adults ages 18 to 26 whose cancer is in remission. For a full week, campers are immersed in adventurous outdoor activities, the camaraderie of a small group, and opportunities to develop unique and powerful leadership skills. YAR is a traveling camp with an itinerary that changes from year to year, so returning campers are given the chance to see multiple facets of Montana’s beauty. This retreat is medically supervised by a volunteer nurse, and the only cost for our YAR campers is transportation to and from their homes.

Arts

Participating in the Arts encourages creativity, nurtures independence, develops social skills, boosts confidence, and gives folks an outlet for communicating thoughts and emotions in a supportive setting. At Eagle Mount, participants explore a variety of artistic mediums, from theater and dance to drawing, painting, and even design thinking.

Different activities are offered during each 3, 6, or 9-week session throughout the year. Check below to see what activities we’re offering now!

Program Offerings

Family Art Nights

As part of our Family Engagement programming, monthly Family Art Nights are occasions for participants and their families to engage in a fun art activity together. Whether it’s painting, clay sculpture, printmaking, or something else, these events are a ton of fun for the whole family!

Theater

Our famous Theater session returns each summer for a round of acting games, costume design, set building, and final performances. All participants – theater background or not – are welcome at this fun, social session.

Drawing

Participants practice sketching, breaking things down into simple shapes, and learning techniques to make drawings look 3-dimensional. Along the way, we develop an understanding of how elements like line, shape, space, value, color, and texture play into our drawings.

Painting

Participants try a variety of painting techniques using acrylics, watercolors, and more, all while exploring how elements like line, shape, space, value, color, and texture play into our paintings.

Cardboard Sculpture

Participants engage with STEAM – science, tech, engineering, arts, and math – as we create cardboard sculptures. From animals to robots to castles, the bounds of participants’ imaginations are limitless!

Dance

Participants move and groove to the music in this multi-disciplinary dance session. Together, we choreograph and perform a dance for the community!

Music

Participants explore various ways of making music through workshops led by local musicians.

Printmaking

Participants try the age-old practice of printmaking by creating art via wood blocks, carved linoleum, and even potatoes!

Sibling Art Camp

Each summer, Eagle Mount sibs are invited for three days of community and creativity. Sibs get to explore some of the activities participants get to do, from painting and printmaking to clay sculpture and papier-mâché. *Open to siblings of Eagle Mount participants; ages 8 and up.

Adventure Days

Adventure Days is all about having fun with friends and building skills for a variety of summer activities for our Eagle Mount participants. Each day, we meet at 9am and get back by 3:30pm. We travel to different locations to explore and make memories together. The program culminates in an overnight trip for each age group. Program Offerings

Climbing at Spire

As one of our “shoulder season” programs, we run climbing sessions each year when the snow is too thin for hitting the slopes, but too deep to play in the mountains. During these times we partner with Spire Climbing to offer adaptive climbing lessons. Learn how to tie-in, learn proper climbing technique and learn tricks of the trade that work for your individual abilities!

Winter Recreation

Just because it’s cold out, doesn’t mean we can’t have fun outside! There is lots to do during the winter months! Come join us as we interact with frozen water in some form or another!

Summer Recreation

The sun is shining, the rivers are flowing, the birds are singing. It’s summer in Montana—time for outdoor adventures! Summer at Eagle Mount is fast, furious, and full of fun! Our summer recreation programming encompasses a variety of activities that provide participants with the opportunity to experience all Montana has to offer. In addition, these activities are designed to develop strength, balance, and coordination, all while learning new skills and making friends.

Ski Big Sky

Take ski and snowboard lessons on the breathtaking slopes of Big Sky. Here, we always focus on individualized, adaptive lessons rather than group lessons.
Visiting from out of town and hoping to set up a ski day? We support adaptive skiers at Big Sky, Moonlight Basin, and Yellowstone Club. For more information and to sign up for lessons, contact the Big Sky Ski Director at bigsky@eaglemount.org.

Eagle Mount partners with Big Sky Resort to provide skiing and snowboarding lessons for people with disabilities and youth with cancer. Eagle Mount supports the opportunity for all individuals to enjoy the exhilaration of snow sports. We offer lessons with our trained staff and volunteers to provide a personalized experience to help meet the goals of each individual. Eagle Mount offers lessons out of Mountain Village, Madison Base and Montage locations. Please see our lesson offerings below.

Fitness

Injuries and challenges don’t have to stand between you and a good workout. Tone your body and lift your emotions at our wheelchair accessible gym. Designed primarily for people with spinal cord injuries, our equipment promotes aerobic fitness as well as basic range of motion and strength training. Individual training is available by appointment. All are welcome in the gym and it can be used independently.

The gym is open during regular pool hours year-round. Individual training is available by appointment. To find out if the gym is a good fit for you or for general information, contact Eagle Mount at (406) 586-1781.

Program Offerings:

Horsemanship Sessions

Mounted and ground lessons occur in sessions that last four to six weeks. During the session, participants attend class once a week where they are paired with a horse and instructor that will assist them in pursuing their individual goals. We strive to provide consistency throughout each session to build trust and increase familiarity for participants.
Mounted lessons are tailored to the individual needs of participants to create an environment that is conducive to meeting personal goals, expanding skill sets, and simply enjoying partnership with an equine. Mounted lessons provide many benefits, with a focus on strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. We offer both private and group lessons depending on the unique abilities, goals, and desires of our participants.
Ground lessons foster bonding between the horse and participant by focusing on showmanship skills, increasing trust and confidence, and connecting with our equine partners in ways that are not possible when mounted.

Destination Lessons

For those who do not call Bozeman or the surrounding area home, destination lessons are available to ensure that qualifying participants have access to the same experiences when visiting the Gallatin Valley. Both mounted and ground lessons are available to create an experience that aligns with your travel itinerary.

All-Abilities Camp

Each summer, we offer four weeks of all-day, all-abilities horse camp. The goal is to provide campers with an up-close look at the many aspects of our equine partners. Participants can expect lots of hands-on time with the horses, allowing them to expand on current skillsets and develop new knowledge. Beyond time alongside our herd, crafts, games, and social engagement will enhance each day.

Stable Smarts

This is a five-week, classroom-based program in which participants gain knowledge about things such as equine health, behavior, movement, anatomical systems and so much more. Participants can expect learning to come from a wide variety of activities including, but not limited to, analyzing videos and real-life scenarios, playing games, and special visits from our horse friends.

Mini Visits

Eagle Mount is home to a handful of miniature horses and donkeys whom we are lucky to call our ambassadors. Upon request, they make public appearances in locations such as nursing homes, schools, libraries and events that align with our mission. They never fail to brighten up the room and spark light in the eyes of those they visit.

Family Engagement

Eagle Mount understands the unique delights and challenges many families face when a family member has special needs. The Family Engagement program is designed to improve the lives of caregivers, parents and siblings by providing respite, support, and family-centered recreational opportunities. This goes right to the heart of Eagle Mount’s mission: using recreation as a means to improve and transform lives.

Participant Information:

Eagle Mount’s family engagement activities include events designed for participants and their families, as well as events designed exclusively for sibling groups and parents/guardians. Activities include incorporation into all our standard offerings, family camps, and special events held at our campus throughout the year.

Volunteer information:

Volunteers are needed to support our special events, family camps, and program collaborations.

Program Offerings

Weekly Evening Rides

Each year, starting in the end of May, our cycling club meets on Monday evenings for a 10-20 mile ride around Bozeman and the surrounding area. Locations include Sypes Canyon, Headwaters State Park, Bracket Creek, and more!

Saturday Long Rides

About once per month in the summer, the cycling club will meet for longer 25–35 mile rides on Saturdays. This program provides fun, adventure, and time to connect with other cycling enthusiasts.

Adaptive Mountain Rides

Eagle Mount has expanded our fleet of adaptive cycles to include mountain cycles. Group Mountain rides are a great way to explore a different type of recreation!

Adaptive Cycle Rentals

We own several varieties of adaptive cycles that we will rent to the public. Please contact us if you are interested in renting an adaptive cycle!

Aquatics

Eagle Mount’s Aquatics Program offers year round adaptive swim and exercise opportunities to individuals with a wide range of abilities.  With the support of trained and dedicated staff and caring volunteers, people with disabilities enjoy the therapeutic benefits unique to our warm saltwater pool. From learning to swim to regaining strength and balance, our aquatic programs offer all participants the opportunity to engage with other participants, stay active and reach personal fitness goals.

Participant Information:

Adult and Young At Heart (YAH) Swim is for individuals over the age of 50 who also meet Eagle Mount’s Eligibility Guidelines. Our adult and Young at Heart classes offer water experiences designed to improve strength, balance, endurance, and overall health improvement.

Independent Exercise is a 45 minute block of time set aside for individuals who want to work at their own pace independently.

Young Adult Water Exercise Classes are for participants aged 18-30 who are looking for the opportunity to either swim laps together, or do water exercise once a week. In these classes we not only work on physical exercise, but also social communication. These classes are led by an instructor and are limited to 6 participants.

Family Swim provides an opportunity for families to enjoy the use of the entire pool for a 45 minute block of time. It is offered Tuesday through Friday. Space is limited and must be scheduled in advance. There will be no instructor, but a lifeguard will be on duty.

Cancer Support Community water aerobics classes are held on Monday and Friday at 2:00 pm. Participants must register through the Cancer Support Community.

Volunteer Information:

Building relationships with children and adults in the Eagle Mount pool is a satisfying way to give back and help others achieve their goals. Volunteers are also needed for cleaning, administrative support, and special initiatives.

For questions regarding participating or volunteering, please email aquatics@eaglemount.org

Family Swim Registration

We offer Family Swim Tues through Thurs at 5pm and Fridays at 3pm. It costs $10 per swim, no matter how many members in your family attend. We cap the number of swimmers in the pool at 20 people. At least one attending member of your family must be eligible for Eagle Mount services.
