To be a Big Sky Kid at Eagle Mount is to experience the incredible wonders of Montana’s outdoors, even as you face the challenges cancer has brought into your life. Big Sky Kids empowers participants to escape the confines of treatment schedules and hospital walls and experience all the thrills that our state has to offer!
Through this program, children and young adults aged 5 to 26, along with their families, can attend medically supervised camps that promote strength, wellness, fun, and freedom in an inspiring natural landscape. You’ll make new friends and memories, and forge meaningful connections that bring deep emotional support both during and after your camp experience.
Begun in 1985, Big Sky Kids serves young people with cancer from Montana and all over the U.S. We provide four different oncology summer camps, as well as a family ski weekend every spring. Our camps are centered around exciting Montana adventures such as white-water rafting, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, zip-lining, and touring the wonders of Yellowstone National Park.

Activities during this annual reunion weekend include downhill skiing or snowboarding at Big Sky Resort, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Lone Mountain Ranch, and a pizza and pool party. Spring Fling is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends and families met at previous camps. Eagle Mount covers the cost of lodging, lift tickets and rentals.
Flight Camp is designed for young adult cancer survivors ages 18-26 years old with dreams of flying. In partnership with Summit Aviation, Big Sky Kids provides four campers the opportunity to learn how to fly a plane and see the beauty of Montana from an entirely new perspective. Campers get hands-on during this 5 day adventure! Each morning starts with participants and their certified flight instructors conducting a pre-flight inspection on Summit’s aircraft before taking to the skies! All flight lessons take place above some of the best views Montana has to offer, as campers learn basic aircraft control and how to perform basic maneuvers; by the end of the week many are even performing their own take-offs and landings! Campers return from their morning flights to delicious themed lunches, afternoons tours of Bozeman International Airport facilities (including emergency response operations, the air traffic control tower, and private jets) and a ground lesson where instructors go over flight controls and aerodynamics, helpful tips for landing smoothly, and how to plan a cross-country flight. The week culminates in a graduation flight to Driggs, ID, during which campers get a bird’s eye view of the majestic Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons!
Kayak, ride horses, fish, swim, create arts and crafts, eat s’mores, and more! Camp Braveheart is designed for campers aged 5 to 10 and their immediate families. Children in this age bracket that are post-treatment are welcome to apply! We’ll gather for 5 nights at Hyalite Youth Camp, a rustic facility located on the beautiful shores of Hyalite Reservoir just outside of Bozeman. Camp Braveheart is medically supervised by a nurse, and the only cost to families is transportation to and from your home.
You’ll be forever changed by this unforgettable experience of the beautiful outdoors. Big Sky Adventure Camp is designed for kids ages 11 to 18 who are still in treatment for their cancer or who have recently completed their treatment, plus one parent or guardian each. This unique camp includes a float on the Yellowstone river, horseback riding, white-water rafting, a day trip to Yellowstone National Park, and many more exciting excursions. Big Sky Adventure Camp is medically supervised by an oncologist, and is an all-expense paid vacation, including travel.
Young Adult Retreat (YAR) is designed for young adults ages 18 to 26 whose cancer is in remission. For a full week, campers are immersed in adventurous outdoor activities, the camaraderie of a small group, and opportunities to develop unique and powerful leadership skills. YAR is a traveling camp with an itinerary that changes from year to year, so returning campers are given the chance to see multiple facets of Montana’s beauty. This retreat is medically supervised by a volunteer nurse, and the only cost for our YAR campers is transportation to and from their homes.
Participating in the Arts encourages creativity, nurtures independence, develops social skills, boosts confidence, and gives folks an outlet for communicating thoughts and emotions in a supportive setting. At Eagle Mount, participants explore a variety of artistic mediums, from theater and dance to drawing, painting, printmaking, and more.
Different activities are offered during each multi-week session throughout the year. Check the calendar to see what activities we’re offering now!

Learning how to handle and care for a horse promotes confidence, patience, self-esteem, and improves social skills. Horseback riding helps improve flexibility, balance, and muscle tone. Unmounted lessons focus on establishing a working relationship with a horse. Eagle Mount’s Adaptive Horsemanship instructors and program are certified through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Int).
Lessons are held for one hour, once a week in four week sessions year round. Participant assessments will be used to determine what type of lesson would be most beneficial and appropriate for each participant. Assessments are held most Mondays between 3p and 5p, please contact us at horsemanship@eaglemount.org to schedule a half hour appointment once all paperwork has been completed. Space is limited and filled on a rotating basis.
Most volunteers serve as leaders and sidewalkers in lessons. Volunteer commitment is approximately one and one half hours per week for each four week session. Volunteers are also needed for barn chores and facility maintenance. No experience is necessary, training is held prior to volunteering.

Mounted and ground lessons occur in sessions that last four to six weeks. During the session, participants attend class once a week where they are paired with a horse and instructor that will assist them in pursuing their individual goals. We strive to provide consistency throughout each session to build trust and increase familiarity for participants.
Mounted lessons are tailored to the individual needs of participants to create an environment that is conducive to meeting personal goals, expanding skill sets, and simply enjoying partnership with an equine. Mounted lessons provide many benefits, with a focus on strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. We offer both private and group lessons depending on the unique abilities, goals, and desires of our participants.
Ground lessons foster bonding between the horse and participant by focusing on showmanship skills, increasing trust and confidence, and connecting with our equine partners in ways that are not possible when mounted.
For those who do not call Bozeman or the surrounding area home, destination lessons are available to ensure that qualifying participants have access to the same experiences when visiting the Gallatin Valley. Both mounted and ground lessons are available to create an experience that aligns with your travel itinerary.
Each summer, we offer four weeks of all-day, all-abilities horse camp. The goal is to provide campers with an up-close look at the many aspects of our equine partners. Participants can expect lots of hands-on time with the horses, allowing them to expand on current skillsets and develop new knowledge. Beyond time alongside our herd, crafts, games, and social engagement will enhance each day.
This is a five-week, classroom-based program in which participants gain knowledge about things such as equine health, behavior, movement, anatomical systems and so much more. Participants can expect learning to come from a wide variety of activities including, but not limited to, analyzing videos and real-life scenarios, playing games, and special visits from our horse friends.
Eagle Mount is home to a handful of miniature horses and donkeys whom we are lucky to call our ambassadors. Upon request, they make public appearances in locations such as nursing homes, schools, libraries and events that align with our mission. They never fail to brighten up the room and spark light in the eyes of those they visit.
Eagle Mount understands the unique delights and challenges many families face when a family member has special needs. The Family Engagement program is designed to improve the lives of caregivers, parents and siblings by providing respite, support, and family-centered recreational opportunities. This goes right to the heart of Eagle Mount’s mission: using recreation as a means to improve and transform lives.
Eagle Mount’s family engagement activities include events designed for participants and their families, as well as events designed exclusively for sibling groups and parents/guardians. Activities include incorporation into all our standard offerings, family camps, and special events held at our campus throughout the year.
Volunteers are needed to support our special events, family camps, and program collaborations.
